Dental Terms & What They Mean

  • Fillings

When tooth decay destroys part of a tooth, the resulting cavity is often sensitive. Your dentist will clean the decayed area by drilling it out. By not cleaning the decayed tooth it could expose inner nerves, compromise the tooth’s structural integrity, or become a site of continued infection. By filling in the hole, dentists restore full functionality to a damaged tooth. At Capitol Family Dental we only use composite resin(tooth colored) filling.

  • Root Canal Treatment

Often a straightforward procedure to relieve dental pain and save your teeth. Patients typically need a root canal when there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. During root canal treatment, your dentist carefully removes the pulp inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canals, and places a filling to seal the space.

  • Extractions

Reasons why you may need an extraction? Non restorable cavities, gum disease, trauma/injury to tooth, wisdom teeth complications, and dental infection control to name few. There are two types of extractions, a simple extraction involves a tooth that is visible above the gums and that a dentist can remove in one piece. A surgical extraction is more complicated and involves the removal of gum tissue, bone, or both.

  • Crowns/Bridges

Dental crowns are a fixed prosthetic restoration made to restore a damaged tooth to its original shape and size. They’re permanently cemented on teeth that have cracked, extensively decayed, or otherwise been damaged. Crowns fit over the top of a tooth and protect what’s underneath it. As for a bridge it is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth definitively to adjacent teeth or dental implants. A bridge can be less invasive than an implant. While a bridge does not replace the tooth root it does fill in the missing tooth space.

  • Dentures

A removable prosthetic device constructed to replace missing teeth. There are two types of dentures, a complete denture replaces all missing teeth in an upper or lower arch sitting on top of the gums. A partial denture is made when a patient still has some of his or her natural teeth and replaces the missing teeth in the upper or lower arch.
